Hardington & Sherr Selected as UAA Men’s Soccer Athletes of the Week

Hardington & Sherr Selected as UAA Men’s Soccer Athletes of the Week

Emory University juniors Sebastian Hardington and Matt Sherr were named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for Men's Soccer, respectively, after leading the seventh-ranked Eagles to wins over Birmingham-Southern College and the University of the South last week.

Hardington led the Eagles with three goals, including the game-winning score in each of the two victories.  During Wednesday night's 2-0 win over regionally-ranked Birmingham-Southern College, Hardington scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, while playing a total of 57 minutes and taking two shots, both on goal.  The forward followed that performance on Saturday with the first multiple-goal game of his career, scoring a pair against the University of the South, including the game winner in the 14th minute and a second on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.  He played 52 minutes in the game, taking a pair of shots, both of which were again on goal.

Hardington leads all Emory players and is tied for third among UAA scorers with five goals this season, and his four game-winning goals are the most in the conference.

Sherr, the only Emory field player to play all 180 minutes during the two games, co-captained the Eagles defense to a pair of shutouts, while helping hold the two opponents to a combined 16 shots and five shots on goal.  The center back helped hold regionally-ranked and previously undefeated Birmingham-Southern to just 10 shots, only four of which were on goal.  He followed that by helping to limit the Sewanee to just six shots, with one on goal, the win on Sunday.

Emory has a 0.48 goals-against average this season, including a 0.24 GAA and five shutouts in the seven games Sherr has played in this season.  In addition, the Eagles have not allowed a goal in the last 415 minutes and 57 seconds of game time, spanning over the last five games.

This was the second conference Athlete of the Week award of Hardington's career, and the third for Sherr (including his second of the season).

Emory has won nine-straight games, and is one of the 17 remaining undefeated teams in Division III with a 9-0-1 overall record.  The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, October 1st, hosting Oglethorpe University at 7:00 PM.
