#9 Men’s Soccer Eyes Key Conference Road Trip

The Emory University Men's Soccer Team, ranked ninth in Division III, will travel north to face a pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents on the road this weekend, taking on New York University at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 17th and Brandeis University at 11:00 AM on Sunday, October 19th.

UAA Update
Two games into the seven game conference schedule, seven of the eight teams are within half a point of first place in the standings.  Currently tied for the UAA lead with 1-0-1 records are Carnegie Mellon and Chicago, while five other teams – Brandeis, Emory, NYU, Rochester, and Case Western Reserve – are each 1-1-0.  Washington (Mo.) is currently in eighth place with a 0-2-0 record.

Other UAA games on Friday include Washington (6-4-1) at Case (7-4-2), Carnegie Mellon (7-3-1) at Brandeis (12-1-0) and Chicago (7-4-1) at Rochester (6-3-2), all starting at 5:00 PM.  On Sunday, all four conference games will start at 11:00 AM, with Carnegie Mellon at NYU (10-2-0), Chicago at Case and Washington at Rochester.

Emory Eagles
The Eagles saw their 11-game winning streak come to a close with a 1-0 loss to Chicago at the Woodruff P.E. Center last Saturday, falling to 11-1-1 overall.  Emory, which is 7-0-0 in games away from the WoodPEC this season, was ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA poll, 13th in the D3Soccer.com rankings, and remained atop the South Atlantic Region rankings. 

Emory has scored 28 goals this season, led by junior Sebastian Hardington, who has scored six goals and assisted on two others for 14 points.  Sophomore Jason Andrejchak has an additional 14 points on four goals and a team-high six assists, while senior Dylan Price has contributed with four goals and five assists for 13 points.  Emory is ranked 81st among Division III teams with 2.15 goals per game.

Defensively, the Eagles have yielded just eight goals in 13 games for a 0.59 goals-against average, the 23rd-best mark among Division III teams.  Junior goalkeeper Abe Hannigan currently ranks 32nd among Division III keepers with a 0.641 goals-against average and 74th with a 0.818 save percentage.  Emory's backline, anchored by seniors Noah Rosen and Carl Credle and juniors Matt Sherr and Derek Chan, has helped hold opponents to averages of 10.8 shots and 3.7 shots on goal per game.

Emory is led by Head Coach Sonny Travis, who has compiled a 101-33-10 record during his eight seasons with the Eagles.  For his 29-year career, which includes stints as the head coach at Centre College and Virginia Wesleyan College, he has a record of 395-125-45, and entered the campaign ranked 13th among active Division III coaches in victories and 17th among Division III coaches all-time with a .735 winning percentage.  Travis is assisted by Cory Greiner and goalkeeper coach Diarmuid McGuigan.

NYU Violets
NYU will enter Friday night's game with a 10-2-0 overall record, including a 6-0-0 mark at home.  The Violets, ranked eighth in the East Region, recently saw a four-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to Case Western Reserve last Saturday.  The team has outscored its opponents 27-7 this year, ranking 65th among Division III teams with 2.25 goals per game and 20th with a 0.57 goals-against average, and has outshot opponents 217-132, including a 104-49 edge in shots on goal.

The Violets' leading scorers this season have been Liam Stimpson (six goals, three assists), Malcolm Montilus (five goals and one assist) and Nicolas Notaro (four goals and three assists).  Goalkeeper Lucas Doucette currently ranks 19th in Division III with a 0.516 goals-against average and 26th with a .868 save percentage.

The Violets are coached by Joe Behan, who is 173-140-34 during his 19 years with the squad, good for a .548 winning percentage.  He is assisted by Ryan Finnigan and Jefferson Baum.

Emory is 19-3-4 all-time against NYU, including a record of 7-3-3 in road games during the series.  The Eagles have won the last three meetings, two of which were overtime victories.  Last year, Emory defeated NYU 2-0 at home, in a game that included a game-winning score from Dylan Price.  Price has three career goals against the Violets, while Matt Sherr, Noah Rosen and senior Jeffrey Cochran each have assists against NYU on their career ledgers.

Brandeis Judges
The Judges have been one of the top-ranked teams in Division III throughout the season, peaking at fourth in the NSCAA poll last week before suffering their first loss of the campaign, a 2-1 defeat to Rochester last Saturday.  Brandeis is now 12-1-0 overall for the campaign, including a 5-0-0 mark at home, and are ranked seventh in both the NSCAA and D3Soccer.com polls, and first in the New England Region.

Brandeis' strength this season has been its defense, which has allowed just four goals and ranks fourth in Division III with a 0.33 goals-against average.  Senior goalkeeper Joe Graffy is seventh in Division III with a 0.31 GAA and 21st with a .871 save percentage, and the defense, which features returning all-UAA Second Team defender Conor Lanahan, has helped the team outshoot opponents 6.9 shots and 2.5 shots on goal per game.

The Judges, who rank 98th in Division III with 2.08 goals per game, has been led by senior Tyler Savonen (seven goals, two assists), sophomore Josh Ocel (four goals and six assists), senior Michael Soboff (six goals and two assists), and sophomore Zach Vieira (five goals and two assists).

Brandeis is led by Head Coach Mike Coven, who is now in his 42nd season with the team, has a career record of 488-255-51, good for a .647 winning percentage.   He is assisted by Gabe Margolis.

Emory is 19-6-2 all-time against Brandeis, including a 5-6-2 mark all-time in games played in Waltham.  The Eagles have won five of the last seven meetings between the two teams, going 5-1-1 in those contests.  Last season, Emory earned a 3-1 home win against the Judges, with Dylan Price scoring a pair of goals, and Jason Andrejchak adding on a third.

Sebastian Hardington's five game-winning goals this season are ranked third among all D-III players and are two short of the program's single-season record… His seven career game-winning goals are tied for the eighth-most in school history… Jeffrey Cochran's nine game-winning assists over his career are tied for the fourth-most in school history, and two behind the program record of 11, set by Patrick Carver… Emory is 114-53-24 all-time in UAA games, good for a .660 winning percentage… The Eagles are 44-39-12 all-time in UAA road contests, good for a .526 winning percentage.
