Led by one of the top defensive units in the country in 2014,
the Emory University Men's Soccer Team finished the season with a
13-4-2 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships
for the 15th time in the program's history.
The Eagles' regular season began with an 11-game undefeated streak
and included a 10-match winning streak (tied for the third-longest
in school history). They allowed more than one goal in a game
just twice in 19 contests, and outscored their opponents by a 31-12
margin. Emory also went 3-3-1 in University Athletic
Association (UAA) games during the year, good for a third-place
finish in the conference.
Other regular season highlights for Emory included wins at its own
season-opening Sonny Carter Invitational on August 29th
and 30th, and the Warrior Classic, hosted by Hendrix
College in Conway, Arkansas on September 13th and
14th. Led by two-time tournament Most Valuable
Player Dylan
Price (the first two-time MVP in the tournament's
history), the Eagles claimed the Sonny Carter Invitational trophy
for the second-straight year and the ninth time overall in the
tournament's 12 years. At the Warrior Classic, junior
defender and team co-captain Matt Sherr
was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
The Eagles also picked up three overtime wins during the year,
each by a 2-1 score. The first two came in the second
overtime period of non-conference home games – September
10th against Covenant and October 1st against
Oglethorpe – with junior forward Sebastian
Hardington scoring the game-winning 'golden goal' in
each. Sherr added a 'golden goal' of his own, the first of
his career, in the first overtime against UAA opponent Washington
University (Mo.) on October 5th in St. Louis,
Missouri. The three overtime wins matched the most in a
season in the program's history (previously accomplished in 1997,
1999, 2000, 2007 and 2012), and Hardington became just the fifth
player in the program's history to record multiple 'golden goals'
in a single season, along with John Symbas (1999), Matthew Levine
(2000), Patrick McFarland (2007) and Price (2011).
The Eagles were ranked as high as sixth in Division III during the
campaign (the team's highest ranking since the final week of the
2008 regular season), and entered the NCAA Tournament as the
country's 11th-ranked squad. Emory received an
at-large bid to the tournament, and was selected to host the first
two-rounds of the NCAA Championships at the Woodruff P.E. Center,
drawing Berry College in the first round. The Eagles led by a
goal in the waning minutes of regulation, but Berry scored late to
tie the match, and again with three minutes left in the second
overtime period, to deal Emory a heartbreaking loss.
Emory's 13 wins were the most recorded by the team in a season
since the 2010 campaign, and marked the program's
13th-consecutive year with a double-digit win
total. The Eagles ended the year ranked 24th in
the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
Division III poll.
The team's success was due in large part to its defense, which
finished the campaign ranked 16th among Division III
squads with a 0.60 goals-against average. Paced by junior
All-UAA First Team selection Sherr, sophomore second team honoree
Scott
Haley and senior all-conference honorable mention
Noah
Rosen, the Eagles shutout nine opponents in 19 games,
the team's most since the 2010 season. Junior goalkeeper
Abe
Hannigan, an All-UAA Honorable Mention, finished the
year ranked 32nd in Division III with a 0.635
goals-against average.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Sebastian Hardington, who
scored seven goals (including the team's only goal in its NCAA
Tournament match) and assisted on two others for 16 points.
Five of his seven goals were game-winning strikes, the
27th-most among NCAA Division III players in 2014.
Dylan Price added on five goals and five assists for 15 points,
while sophomore All-UAA Honorable Mention Jason
Andrejchak rounded out the Eagles' double-digit
scorers with four goals and a team-high seven assists for 15
points.
In addition to their athletic success during the year, both Price
and Sherr were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team,
for their achievements in the classroom. It marked the
second-straight year that Price had been recognized with the award,
while Sherr picked up his first career honor from Capital One.
Emory Head Coach Sonny Travis picked up his
100th victory in his eight seasons with the program
during the team's 2-1 double-overtime win over Oglethorpe
University on October 1st. He finished the season
with 397 career victories, and sits just three shy of becoming only
the 37th men's soccer coach in NCAA history (any
Division) with 400 career wins.
