Eagles Open Play at the Atlanta Classic

The Emory University women's tennis team kicked off its 2012 fall season on Friday morning, facing doubles teams from Division I Georgia State and the University of North Florida, and singles opponents from the Division I University of Alabama – Birmingham and Georgia State at the Atlanta Classic.

In doubles action, Emory junior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Emma Taylor teamed up to defeat the top-doubles pair from the University of North Florida of Lorena Aviles and Taylor Hollander, 8-3.  Sophomores Lauren Pinsky and Allie Damico also claimed a doubles victory on the first day of the Classic, defeating freshmen teammates Stephanie Loutsenko and Annette Sullivan 8-6.

The Eagles turned in a strong singles effort during the first day, winning six of their nine matches, with the majority of the team facing players from UAB.  Clark, the reigning NCAA Division III Singles Champion, fought her way to a three-set victory over Isabel Fernandez, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.  Sophomores Catharine Harris and Lauren Pinsky also claimed day-one victories, with Harris defeating Megan Nelms of Georgia State 6-0, 6-2, and Pinsky earning a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Rachel Cohen of UAB.

In addition, three freshmen claimed their first collegiate singles victory on Friday, with Beatrice Rosen defeating Menanteau Moolman 6-0, 6-1, Taylor claiming a 7-5, 6-3 win over Elaine Simon, and Madison Gordon downing Sarah Witkowski 6-0, 6-2.

While the matches played during the weekend do not count towards the team's record, individual results are reflected on each player's singles and doubles record for the season.

The Eagles will continue play at the Atlanta Classic, held in Piedmont Park, on Saturday, starting at 2:00 PM.
