#4 Women’s Tennis Picks up a Win on Hawaii Trip

The fourth-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team earned a victory during its spring break trip to Hawaii this week, defeating the University of Hawai'i – Hilo 9-0 on Thursday, and leading Hawai'i Pacific 4-3 on Friday before the match was stopped due to rain.

With the win, Emory now stands at 5-2 on the season.

Thursday's match proved to be a dominating victory for the vacationing Eagles, who shutout their hosts, Hawaii Hilo.  The Eagles swept through the three doubles matches, with the combination of freshman Madison Gordon and senior Jordan Wylie winning 8-2 at the first contest, freshman Emma Taylor and junior Brenna Kelly claiming an 8-2 win at second doubles, and sophomore Danielle Truitt and freshman Stephanie Loutsenko earning an 8-0 win at third doubles.

In singles action, the Eagles earned six straight-set victories.  Junior Gabrielle Clark defeated her first singles opponent 6-3, 6-3, while freshman Marissa Levine earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles.  In the third singles match, freshman Annette Sullivan claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and sophomore Lauren Pinsky added a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles.  Rounding out the day, sophomores Catharine Harris and Allie Damico each picked up wins, the former winning 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles, and the latter claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win in the sixth singles match.

On Friday, Emory bounced back from a rough start in doubles with some strong singles play before the match was stopped due to rain.  The Eagles fell behind 2-1 after the doubles matches with the squad's only victory coming from Clark and Sullivan in the first match, 8-4.

However, the Eagles excelled in the singles matches, winning three of the four contests that finished before the weather turned.  Clark earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles, and freshman Beatrice Rosen followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles.  In the fifth singles match, Gordon claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win.  In addition, Levine's second singles match was even at a set apiece in the third set, while Loutsenko was up a set over her sixth-singles opponent.  Emory's only singles loss came in the fourth singles contest, where Wylie fell 6-1, 6-3.

The Eagles will return home from Hawaii this weekend, and turn their attention back towards NCAA Division III competition with a home match against Tufts University, ranked 16th in the Nation, on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
