Fourth-Ranked Emory Bounces Back with Win over #12 Wash U.

Fourth-Ranked Emory Bounces Back with Win over #12 Wash U.

In a rare non-conference tournament meeting between the two University Athletic Association (UAA) rivals, the fourth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team defeated 12th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) 5-0 as part of the Fab 7 Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday morning.

The Eagles did not skip a beat in the match, despite play being moved to the indoor courts at the Woodruff Physical Education Center due to rain.  Emory was able to sweep through the doubles contests, with junior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Annette Sullivan claiming an 8-4 win over Kate Klein and Corinne Rauck at first doubles, senior Jordan Wylie and freshman Madison Gordon earning an 8-4 second doubles win over Theresa Petraskova and Jamie Silverberg, and junior Brenna Kelly and freshman Emma Taylor rounded out the sweep with an 8-2 win over Aly Coran and Paige Madara at third doubles.

It marked the fifth time this season that Emory has swept the doubles matches in a dual match.

With the match being played to decision, the Eagles needed to win just two singles matches to claim a team victory.  Clark supplied the first win for Emory, defeating Petraskova 6-0, 6-3 in the first singles match.  At fifth singles, Kelly clinched the Eagles' triumph with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Madara.

When play was stopped, Emory freshman Beatrice Rosen led Silverberg 7-6 (2), 2-0 at third singles, and Gordon held a 6-2, 5-4 advantage over Coran at fourth singles.  Freshman Marissa Levine trailed Klein 2-1 in the second singles match, while the sixth singles contest between freshman Stephanie Loutsenko and Rauck was never started.

With the win, Emory now stands at 7-3 this season, while Washington dropped to 6-4 with the loss.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards their final match of the Fab 7 Tournament, as Emory will face off against Johns Hopkins University, the top-ranked team in Division III, on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
