#3 Eagles Advance at UAA Championships with Win over NYU

The Emory University Women's Tennis team, ranked third in Division III and the top-seeded squad at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, opened the conference tournament with a 9-0 win over eighth-seeded New York University on Thursday morning.

Emory improved to 11-4 overall on the season with the victory, the team's fifth shutout of the campaign.  NYU dropped to 5-4 on the campaign with the loss.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick start with a sweep of the doubles matches, as Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan bested Ashley Mansato and Alison Wang 8-3 at first doubles, Jordan Wylie and Madison Gordon claimed an 8-0 win over Mari Tzakis and Madeline King at second doubles, and Brenna Kelly and Emma Taylor earned an 8-1 triumph over Jazmin Colling and Becky Kumar at third doubles.

Emory continued to play well into the singles matches.  Clark improved to 22-6 in singles action this year with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mansato in the first singles match, while Beatrice Rosen earned her ninth-straight victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wang at second singles.  In the third-singles match, Marissa Levine bested Tzakis 6-1, 6-0, and Gordon followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over King at fourth singles.  Rounding out the shutout, Kelly bested Ramya Pokala 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles, and Sullivan claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexandra Ziarko at sixth singles.

The Eagles will now advance to the semifinals of the UAA Championships, where they will face the winner of the first-round match between seventh-ranked and fourth-seeded Chicago and 22nd-ranked and fifth seeded Case Western Reserve.  Emory's semifinal match is slated for a 2:00 PM start at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
