#4 Emory Advances in NCAA Tournament; Will Face #15 Sewanee in Third Round

The fourth-ranked Emory University Eagles rolled to a 5-0 win over 21st-ranked Trinity University (Texas) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles (15-4) will host the 15th-ranked University of the South (19-5) on Sunday in the third round of the tournament, after the Tigers defeated 16th-ranked Washington and Lee 5-4 earlier in the day on Saturday.  This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Eagles earning a 6-3 victory  over Sewanee on March 2nd.  The match has been moved to a 4:00 PM start to accommodate Sewanee's commencement ceremonies on Sunday.

The winner of Sunday's match between Emory and Sewanee will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, to be held in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 20th

Emory took early leads in both the second and third doubles matches, but a rain storm forced the match to be moved indoors during the middle of doubles play.  The Eagles, however, did not skip a beat, as senior Jordan Wylie and freshman Madison Gordon bested Trinity's Caroline White and Kathleen Lundquist 8-2 at second doubles, and junior Brenna Kelly and freshman Emma Taylor defeated Stephanie Williamson and Kristy Hamilton 8-1 at third doubles.  Emory's first doubles pairing of junior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Annette Sullivan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Thavindra Ekanayake and Kyie Hornbeck.

The Eagles would carry their strong play over to singles, with freshman Beatrice Rosen winning 6-0, 6-0 over Hornbeck at second singles.  Clark would clinch the match minutes later for Emory, winning 6-2, 6-0 at first singles over Ekanayake.

Two singles matches that were started were left unfinished with Emory freshman Marissa Levine tied 3-3 with Gabrielle Roe at third singles, and Gordon leading White 6-1, 5-2 at fourth singles.  The fifth and sixth singles matches were never started.

With the loss, Trinity ends its 2013 campaign with an overall record of 11-15.
