Women's Tennis Pick Up Victories over #12 Sewanee and #13 Washington

The second-ranked Emory University women's tennis program began the 2016 spring season on Saturday afternoon against a pair of ranked opponents in #13 Washington University and #12 Sewanee. The Eagles won both matches, defeating WashU 6-3 and Sewanee 7-2 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

In the first match of the day against the Bears, Emory collected singles victories by sophomore Bridget Harding, seniors Beatrice Rosen and Madison Gordon and junior Melissa Goodman. Harding won her no. 1 singles in a tight two setter over Rebecca Ho, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Rosen defeated her opponent, Jaime Silverberg, 6-4, 6-0 in the no. 2 singles. Gordon trounced Aly Coran in the no. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2 and Goodman needed a third set but knocked off Kaylan Griffith in comeback fashion 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) to win the no. 5 point.

In doubles action, junior Paula Castro and freshman Daniella Moreno-Kaste earned an 8-6 triumph over Coran/Ho in the no. 2 doubles and sophomore Anna Fuhr and partner freshman Daniela Lopez earned the other doubles point, beating Griffith/Kate Lee by a count of 8-3.

Against Sewanee, Emory picked up an easy 7-2 decision over the Tigers. The Eagles earned two of the three doubles points in the match as Gordon/Goodman defeated their opponents 8-1 in the no. 2 doubles and the pair of freshman Taylor Cosme and senior Stephanie Loutsenko won the no. 3 doubles 8-5.

In singles, Emory won the first five en route to the win. Cosme needed a third set but earned the 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6). Junior Michelle Satterfield won in straight sets as did Gordon by a count of 6-3, 6-3. Castro triumphed 6-1, 6-2 in the no. 4 singles and Goodman needed a first set tiebreaker but still won in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-2 to win the no. 5 singles points.

Emory will travel to East Tennessee State to fsace the Division I Bucs on Sunday with a match start time scheduled for 9:00 AM EST.
