The fourth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team knocked off top-ranked Williams College 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The victory gave the Eagles their ninth win in a row and now sit 17-2 on the season while the loss dropped the Ephs to 8-2 on the campaign. With the win, Emory also snapped a 13-match losing streak to Williams dating back to 2006.
Before the start of the match, the Eagles recognized the Class of 2016 of Beatrice Rosen, Madison Gordon, Marissa Levine and Stephanie Loutsenko with a pre-match ceremony.
Juniors Michelle Satterfield and Paula Castro led things off for Emory, winning the no.3 doubles point in quick fashion, 8-3. The Ephs however tied the match as their no.1 doubles team of Juli Raventos and Linda Shin defeated sophomore Anna Fuhr and freshman Daniela Lopez on the no.1 doubles court 8-4. Junior Katarina Su and sophomore Bridget Harding took the rubber match 8-5 to give Emory a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
Rosen put the Eagles ahead 3-1 with a victory on the no.4 singles court 6-1, 6-2 before Williams cut the deficit to 3-2 as Raventos beat Harding for the no.1 singles point 6-1, 6-3. Emory then clinched the match with a pair of second-set tiebreakers that ended just minutes apart. Gordon claimed the no.6 singles point 6-2, 7-6 (4) and freshman Taylor Cosme picked up the win for the no.3 singles point 6-1, 7-6 (2). Satterfield and Su rounded out singles play for the Eagles as both players fell in three sets.
The Eagles will now take a short break before returning to action on Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th against Division I programs Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina.
