The top-ranked Emory University women's tennis team was handed a 5-2 defeat to Division I opponent Charleston Southern University on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Eagles to 17-3 overall and snaps Emory's season-long nine match winning streak. With the win, CSU improves to 13-4 for the season.
In doubles action, junior Katarina Su and Bridget Harding won the no.2 doubles match for the Eagles, earning a 6-1 victory. However, the Buccaneers claimed the doubles point in the match as CSU beat sophomore Anna Fuhr and Daniela Lopez 6-1 on court no.1 and juniors Paula Castro and Michelle Satterfield 6-2 on court no.3.
Seniors Beatrice Rosen and Madison Gordon led Emory in singles play as Rosen won the no.4 singles point in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 and Gordon took home the win on the no.6 singles court in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Gordon has now won a team-leading 11 matches in a row and moves to 17-2 on the year. The senior duo also continues to climb up the Emory all-time list with their wins on Saturday as Rosen now sits tied for ninth place all-time with 75 career singles victories and Gordon moves into a tie for 13th all-time with her 72nd career singles win.
In the remaining singles matches, Harding was edged out on the no.1 singles line 6-3, 7-5 and Satterfield was bested 7-5, 6-4 for the no.2 point. On the no.3 singles court, freshman Taylor Cosme fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 and in the no.5 singles match, Su was defeated 6-2, 6-1.
The Eagles return to the courts tomorrow morning with a match against another Division I foe, Coastal Carolina. The match is set to begin at 11:00 AM in Conway, S.C.
