Top-ranked and top-seeded Emory University advanced to its 29th University Athletic Association title match in as many years on Saturday afternoon, defeating nationally 16th-ranked and fourth seeded University of Chicago, 8-1, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida in UAA Semifinals.
The Eagles (22-4) will be looking to capture the fourth consecutive UAA title and 27th overall in program history on Sunday when they face Washington University in the championship match. The Bears (15-7), ranked 12th nationally and the third seed in the draw, knocked off second-seeded and ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, in the other UAA semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Earlier this season, Emory topped WashU, 6-3, in a neutral court match held at Sewanee University. In the all-time series with the Bears, the Eagles hold a perfect 20-0 advantage.
Emory began the match by taking two of the three doubles points. Junior Michelle Satterfield and Paula Castro earned the no.2 doubles for Emory, winning by an 8-1 margin. The Maroons had to forfeit the no.3 doubles match, giving freshman Taylor Cosme and senior Madison Gordon the win. On court no.1, sophomore Anna Fuhr and freshman Daniela Lopez were edged out by a score of 8-3.
In singles play, the Eagles closed out the match winning all six singles in straight sets. Sophomore Bridget Harding won on the no.1 line 6-1, 6-1 followed by a win by Satterfield at second singles 6-2, 7-6 (3). Cosme, senior Beatrice Rosen and Gordon all lost just one game in their victories as Cosme took the third singles match 6-0, 6-1 and Rosen and Gordon each posting 6-1, 6-0 triumphs in the no.4 and no.5 singles matches. Castro rounded out singles action for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-3 decision for the no.6 singles point.
