Emory Baseball Ends Home Season with 5-4 10-Inning Win over Methodist

The Emory University baseball team loaded the bases with no outs in 10th inning, and Patrick Riebsame scored the game-winning run on a balk, giving the Eagles a 5-4 win over Methodist University in their final home game of the 2011 season.

Although the Eagles never trailed by more than run in the game, the Eagles did not take the lead until their final at bat.  Riebsame started the 10th inning by reaching on an error from the Monarchs' third baseman, advancing to second on a passed ball, and to third on a bunt single from Jonathan Reilly.  After Andrew Cohn walked to load the bases, pitcher Rusty White entered the game, and balked before his second pitch of the contest to plate the game-winning run.

Emory sophomore Mike Bitanga earned the win in relief with four and a third innings of four-hit baseball, allowing just one run, while striking out a batter and walking another.  He retired the final seven batters he faced in the game, improving to 3-3 on the season with a 2.25 ERA.

Bitanga was one of just two pitchers used by the Eagles in the extra-inning affair, as freshman Ben Hinojosa started the contest, and earned a no-decision after allowing three runs on 11 hits and two walks, and striking out four batters.

Cohn finished the game one-for-three with a bunt single, and the senior now sits with 199 hits during his career with one game remaining in the regular season.  Reilly contributed with a four-for-five performance at the plate, including a double, while Ryan Jones drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.  Andrew DeYoung and O'Connor also picked up RBIs in the game.

Prior to the game, Emory recognized its seven graduating baseball players - Cohn, Elliott Coor, Jones, Chris Monaco, Evan Plys, Riebsame and Gabe Shivers - who were playing in their final home home game as an Eagle.

The Eagles improved to 26-16 on the season with the win, while Methodist dropped to 28-14 with the loss.  The Eagles will wrap up their 2011 regular season on Tuesday, traveling south to face LaGrange College at 6:00 PM.
