Emory Men's & Women's Cross Country Teams Race To First-Place Finishes At Viking Open

The Emory men's and women's cross country teams enjoyed a productive Saturday morning as each squad posted a first-place finish at the Viking Open hosted by Berry College.

The men's side, ranked first in the Southeast Region, topped the 15-team field with 54 points.  Tennessee Tech was runner-up with 69 points while Berry recorded a third-place performance with 100 points.  Rounding out the top five were Sewanee (102 pts.) and Darton Community College (105 pts.).   Senior Scott Jarvis (Lilburn, GA) paced the Emory effort,  clocking a personal-best 8K time of 26:41, good for fourth place overall out of 132 runners.  Junior Ishan Dey (Kensington, MD)  was the No. 2 Emory finisher and also concluded the competition with a career-best performance of 27:15 that placed 10th.  Sophomores Tyler Cooke (Atlanta, GA) and Ryan Callahan (Wyncote, PA) were the next to Eagles to cross the finish line with Cooke's showing a 27:20 good for 12th position and Callahan's 27:31, slotting him 14th.  Rounding out the team's scorers was sophomore Hirsh Gaikwad (Naperville, IL) with a time of 27:44 that ranked 18th.

The 35th-ranked Emory women came through with a dominant performance with its 17 points by far the best score out of the 15 teams hitting the course.   The University of West Georgia took home second place with 85 points while Tennessee Tech was third (111 pts.)   All five of the Eagles' scorers claimed top-10 finishes in the 142-runner field, led for the second straight week by sophomore Hannah Moriarty (Nashua, NH) who notched a personal-best 6K effort of 23:17 that was good for second place.  Sophomore Marissa Gogniat (Monroeville, PA) was right behind Moriarty at 23:27 while classmate Elise Viox (St. Louis, MO) checked in at 23:31, good for sixth place. Closing out the team's scorers were sophomore Stephanie Crane (Annapolis, MD) and freshman Aileen Rivell (Colts Neck, NJ) with their respective times of 23:36 and 23:43 eighth and ninth overall.

Emory returns to action on Oct. 20 when it travels to Rochester to compete in the UAA Championships.
