Emory Cross Country Teams Wind Up Seasons At NCAA Championships

The Emory men's and women's cross country teams wrote the final chapter in their respective seasons on Saturday by competing in the NCAA Division III Championships.  This year's nationals were hosted by Hanover College (IN).

Both squads posted 32nd-place finishes with the women totaling 734 points and the men's side recording 844 points.  Johns Hopkins defended its women's title with 85 points, well ahead of runner-up Williams College (137 pts.).  Middlebury claimed the No. 3 position with 185 points while the University of Chicago and MIT tied for fourth with 261 points.  In the men's competition, St. Olaf brought home the title with 84 points, narrowly edging North Central who finished with 86 points.  UW-Lacrosse was third (155 pts.) while Williams held down the No. 4 slot (218 pts.).

Junior Tamara Surtees led Emory women's effort, covering the 6k course in a time of 22:42 that placed 111th (84th scoring spot) out of 280 competitors.  It marked the seventh time this year that Surtees had ranked as the Eagles' No. 1 runner.  Senior Emily Caesar, running in her final meet as a collegian, clocked a 22:53 that placed 142nd.  Rounding out the Eagle scorers were junior Marissa Gogniat (23:35), senior Meredith Lorch (23:45) and junior Elise Viox (23:55).  Also competing were sophomore Ashley Stumvoll (23:56) and freshman Michelle Kagei (24:52).

Senior Eddie Mulder was the men's top performer, turning in an 8k showing of 26:07, good for 129th place out of 275 entries.  Senior Alex Fleischhacker was the next Eagle to cross the finish line in a time of 26:32.  Rounding out the Emory scorers were junior Tyler Cooke (27:01), junior Patrick Crews (27:20) and freshman Austin Hunt (27:51).  Senior Hank Ashforth (28:01) and freshman Michael Sisario (28:18) also took to the course.
