2022 Men’s Cross Country Recap

2022 Men’s Cross Country Recap

The 2022 Emory men's cross country program competed in one of the best seasons in history winning the very first UAA Championship in program history.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Linh Nguyen, the Eagles finished in the top three in all but one meet across the season and helped Emory finish as the top team at three meets including the NCAA South Regional Championships. After winning the regional meet, the Eagles earned an automatic bid into the NCAA DIII Championships, the team's ninth consecutive appearance. The Eagles took home a 21st-place finish at the national meet. The season was led by a trio of veteran standouts that made a huge impact on the program.

Senior Spencer Moore turned in one of the most impressive seasons of his career.  He finished in first place for Emory at six of the seven meets he competed in this season. Moore registered a season-best 24:22 8k at the UAB Blazer Classic finishing in eighth place out of 176 runners at the event. He placed second at the Julius Johnson Invitational with a time of 25:31 with 99 other athletes followed by a 24:27 8k at the Paul Short Run placing 16th out of 403 runners. Moore turned in a time of 24:49 at the UAA Championships good for a third place finish out of 75 athletes. At the regional meet, Moore raced to a 25:22 finish to finish fourth overall before finishing as the top runner for the Eagles at the national meet running a 25:45 to place 54th.

Alongside Moore was classmate Brett Lucas who was also a vital piece of the 2022 Eagles program. He finished in third place for the Eagles at six of the seven meets he competed in this season. He took a first place finish at the Julius Johnson Invitational racing to a 25:27 8k beating out 98 other athletes. He also registered his season-best time of 24:28 at the Paul Short Run placing 19th out of 403 runners in the event. Lucas finished just behind Moore at the UAA Championships racing a 24:51 to place fourth out of 75 athletes.

The third upperclassman to make an impact on the season was Ethan Thompson. He finished in the top-five in each event he raced in this season including a season-best time of 24:57 at the Paul Short Run. Thompson finished in third place at the Julius Johnson Invitational with a time of 25:37, just .10 seconds behind teammate Moore. He took 24th at the UAB Blazer Classic with a time of 25:10 before taking ninth at the UAA Championships in October (24:59). Rounding out the season, he finished as the second-best runner for Emory at the national meet with a time of 25:56 to place 72nd out of 292 runners.

Moore, Lucas and Thompson all earned All-UAA honors with Moore and Lucas garnering First Team recognition and Thompson earning Second Team honors. Seven athletes also earned USTFCCCA Academic All-America honors for their efforts in the classroom this season.
