Emory Softball Falls in Series Finale at CWRU

Emory Softball Falls in Series Finale at CWRU

The Emory University softball team dropped the fourth and final game of its series against Case Western Reserve early Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, OH.

The Eagles fell in a tight 7-4 battle with the Spartans to move their season record to 15-15 and their record in conference play to 4-8.

The Eagles had a powerful hitting day but it wasn't enough to overpower the consistency of the Spartans offense. Junior Tyler Miller had an outstanding day for the Eagles, going for two home runs in the outing for the first time in her career. Miller had a team-high three RBI as well as two runs. Sophomore Page Nellis had a solid showing with a 2-for-4 day at the plate that consisted of one RBI and one run thanks to a solo shot in the third inning. Senior Mattie Ryan was her usual consistent self, going a solid 2-for-4 at the plate as well as pitching two innings which moved her season record in the circle to 12-6. Sophomore Natalie Swift drew the start in the circle for the Eagles and went 4.0 innings while giving up just four hits and two earned runs in her stint.

A scoreless first inning for both teams set a different tone for this game than the other three games in the series. The Spartans struck first plating one run in the second inning on a triple into deep center field. The Eagles responded quickly, plating one run of their own in the third inning thanks to Nellis' homer over the center field fence.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Spartans did the bulk of their damage in the third inning scoring three more runs to put them up 4-1. The Eagles would bring the game within one in the fourth inning on a two-run homer from Miller that scored sophomore Rachel Cocolis and swung the momentum back in the Eagles favor.

The Spartans consistency was on full display as they scored one more run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The third and final home run for the Eagles came in the sixth by Miller but that would be the last run scored for Emory as the score ended 7-4 in the Spartans favor.

The Eagles return home for their final home series of the year when they play NYU next weekend with the first game set to begin at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 15th.
