2022 Softball Season Recap

2022 Softball Season Recap

The 2022 Emory University softball campaign saw the squad return to a full length season for the first time since 2019 and was filled with ups and downs and an unmistakable competitive spirit that sparked the team all season long.

The Eagles finished their season with an 18-20 record including a conference record of 7-13 that saw them finish the season fifth in the UAA. Over the course of the season Emory saw some standout individual performances resulting in four All-UAA selections and five UAA Athlete of the Week selections.

A pair of seniors led the way for the Eagles as both the strongest bats and defensive aces on the team. Senior Mattie Ryan rounded out her illustrious career in a way that only she could. After spending the entirety of her career playing positions in the field she stepped up for the Eagles in a big way as one of the team's go-to pitchers. Ryan finished the season with a record of 14-8 while pitching 14 complete games. Her performance at the plate didn't slow down either as she once again led the team in batting average at .373 with a team-high 30 RBI and six home runs. For her accomplishments on the season, Ryan was recognized with a spot on the All-UAA Second Team. Ryan finishes her career as one of the best hitters in Eagles program history finishing sixth all-time in on-base percentage (.474) and ninth in slugging percentage (.587).

Senior Megan Weisenberg had an impressive season of her own playing in the outfield for most of the season where her speed helped the Eagles out of many tight situations. Weisenberg registered a batting average of .357 and tied for the team lead with a total of 41 hits. Early in the batting order for most of the season Weisenberg used her patented speed to lead the team in runs scored (33) and stolen bases (9). Weisenberg also finished first in the conference and 15th in the nation in a surprise statistic having been hit by a pitch an astounding 12 times. Along with four-year teammate Ryan, Weisenberg was also recognized as a member of the All-UAA Second Team.

Graduate student Natalie Costero, in her first season with Emory, was the final member of the Eagles squad to be named to the All-UAA Second Team. Costero started all but two games for the Eagles which helped her to finish fourth in batting average (.333) and third in total hits (32). Graduate student Allie Moberg also earned an All-UAA nod as an honorable mention recipient despite not joining the Eagles squad until 10 games into the season. Moberg paced the team in conference play in both runs scored (13) and slugging percentage (.579).

The Eagles, who began their season earlier than most thanks to the warm Georgia weather, opened the year against two regional foes, Maryville (TN) and Agnes Scott, and split those series to open 2-2. The Eagles then traveled to Columbus, GA for the NFCA Leadoff Classic where they played in six games over the course of three days. The Eagles would continue the trend of splitting series going 3-3 including a big win over nationally ranked Randolph-Macon. Emory would use the momentum they gained from the tournament to go 5-1 during non-conference play for the remainder of March including a thrilling extra-inning 6-5 victory over Webster that saw sophomore Rachel Cocolis have the play of her career to this point with a game-tying RBI triple.

Heading into their conference slate with a 10-6 record, the Eagles split their first two series against Carnegie Mellon and Brandies before hitting a cold stretch. Emory would go 3-9 over their last three series to end their season short as they were unable to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason tournament.

The Emory softball team had a successful year in the classroom as well, placing eight of their 11 eligible athletes on the Spring UAA All-Academic Team as well as on the NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete Team.
