Emory University senior Gabrielle Clark won the NCAA Singles Championship and led the Eagles to the program’s sixth National Championship during the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships in Claremont, California last week. Clark finished her week at the NCAA Championships with a perfect 8-0 record in singles matches, and a 4-2 record in doubles contests. Her 6-2, 6-1 win over Jordan Brewer of Amherst gave her the second NCAA Singles Championship of her career, becoming just the second player in the program’s history to accomplish the feat twice, and the fifth woman overall in NCAA Division III history. Clark also teamed with freshman Michelle Satterfield to reach the semifinals of the Doubles Championships. She ended her career with overall records of 108-21 in singles play and 111-34 in doubles action, and her 219 combined victories (singles and doubles) match Mary Ellen Gordon for the most in the program’s history.
Emory University senior Gabrielle Clark broke the program record for doubles wins and became just the second Eagle to reach 100 career singles victories, while helping to lead the Eagles to a pair of victories during the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships last weekend. During Emory’s 5-0 win over Berry in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Clark teamed with freshman Michelle Satterfield to win the first doubles match by an 8-1 score, and led 6-1, 5-0 in the first singles match before play was stopped. The doubles win was the 106th of her career, pushing Clark past former Eagle Zahra Dawson for the most over a career in school history. On Sunday, she helped the Eagles to another 5-0 win, this time over 19th-ranked Washington and Lee University in the third round, defeating the Atlantic South Region’s fifth-ranked pairing 8-4 in first doubles, and earning a 6-0, 6-0 win over the region’s second-ranked singles player at no. 1 singles. The singles win was the 100th of her career, as Clark joined former Eagle Mary Ellen Gordon as the only two players in program history to break the century mark in singles wins. Clark improved to 16-4 this season in singles play and to 21-7 in doubles action. The Eagles, ranked first in Division III, set a program record with their 25th win of the season, and will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh-straight season.
Emory University senior Gabrielle Clark became just the second player in the program’s history to reach the 200-combined win mark, in addition to matching the program record for career doubles victories, while helping the second-ranked Eagles win the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, Clark finished the week (which included a non-conference match against Georgia Gwinnett College, the top-ranked team in the NAIA) with a 4-0 record in singles matches and a 3-1 mark in doubles play. She won each of her singles matches in straight sets, including wins over the nationally third-ranked player in the NAIA, and Division III players ranked first and sixth in their respective regions. She failed to surrender more than three games in a set to her opponents. In doubles action, she teamed with freshman Michelle Satterfield to go undefeated during the UAA Championships, including wins over doubles teams ranked first and fourth in their respective regions. Clark improved to 15-4 in singles matches and to 19-7 in doubles action this season. In addition, she is now tied for the program record with 105 career doubles wins, and is one victory shy of becoming the second player in the program’s history to reach 100 career singles wins. Clark and the Eagles finished their regular season with a 23-2 record.
Emory University sophomore Beatrice Rosen helped lead the second-ranked Eagles to a 9-0 victory at home over Brenau University on Tuesday with wins in both the third doubles and second singles matches. Rosen teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler in the third doubles contest to shutout Snezhana Kiseleva and Valeria Savina 8-0. She later defeated the 15th-ranked singles player in the NAIA, Maria Perdomo Medina, 6-1, 6-0 in the second singles match. Rosen, ranked 14th in the Atlantic South Region in singles play, improved to 14-8 in singles matches and to 9-8 in doubles action this season. Her performance has helped the Eagles to a 19-2 record this season.

Clark opened the weekend with an 8-1 doubles win with partner Michelle Satterfield, and a 6-0, 6-3 win in singles over the sixth-ranked player in the Northeast Region, leading the Eagles to a 9-0 win over eighth-ranked Middlebury College on Friday. During Saturday’s 8-1 team win over fourth-ranked Amherst College, she became just the third player in school history with 100 career doubles wins, defeating the two-time National Champion and current top-ranked duo in the Northeast, Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin, 8-2, followed by a 6-1, 6-3 singles win over Brewer (ranked first in the Northeast). Clark wrapped up the weekend by registering two match victories during the Eagles’ 5-4 win over seventh-ranked Bowdoin College, winning 8-5 with Satterfield over the Northeast Region’s fourth-ranked duo, and 6-1, 7-6 (3) over the 10th-ranked singles player. She now stands at 10-4 in singles matches this season and at 15-6 in doubles action for the campaign. Clark has helped the Eagles win six-straight matches, including five-straight against Division III teams ranked 11th or higher, as the squad improved to 18-2 in 2014.
Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield helped the third-ranked Eagles upset top-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 7-2, with wins in both the first doubles and third singles matches. Playing in the first doubles match for the first time in her career, in addition to teaming with Gabrielle Clark for the first time, she claimed an 8-5 win over the Blue Jays’ Hailey Hogan and Sydney Lehman, the third-ranked duo in the Atlantic South Region. Satterfield, ranked seventh in the region in singles play, later registered the match-clinching victory for the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 22nd-ranked Ashnaa Rao at third singles. The freshman became the first Eagle to reach the 20-win mark this season, improving to 20-6 overall in singles matches, while raising her doubles record to 18-6 for the campaign. Satterfield and the Eagles raised their season ledger to 15-2 with the win, including a perfect 9-0 mark against NCAA Division III opposition.

Clark teamed with freshman Katarina Su to win the first doubles match 8-5 over Maggie MacPhail and Caroline Emhardt, the sixth-ranked pairing in the Central Region. She later won the first singles match by a 6-1, 6-1 score over Claire Marshall, ranked 20th in the Central Region. Clark, ranked first in singles and sixth in doubles in the Atlantic South Region, improved to 6-4 in singles play this season and to 11-6 in doubles action. With the win, Emory remained perfect against Division III opposition with an 8-0 record, improving to 14-2 overall.
Emory University freshman Katarina Su went 2-0 in singles matches and won a first-doubles contest over the course of three matches against nationally-ranked NCAA Division II squads for the third-ranked Eagles last week. Playing sixth singles on Thursday against sixth-ranked Lynn University, Su won her match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, after falling 8-3 in the third doubles contest during a 6-3 Emory loss. In a 7-1 Eagles defeat at third-ranked Barry University on Friday, she was leading 3-1 in the second set of the fifth singles match after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), before play was stopped. The freshman suffered a doubles loss in the third match, 8-2, earlier in the contest. Su bounced back on Saturday, helping Emory to a 6-3 win over 15th-ranked Nova Southeastern University. She stepped into the first doubles match, and teamed with Gabrielle Clark to claim and 8-3 win, and followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the fifth singles match. Su is now 16-1 in singles matches this season and 7-7 in doubles contests. Her performance has helped Emory go 13-2 in spring season matches.
Emory University freshman Melissa Goodman won her singles match and both of her doubles matches without surrendering a game last Tuesday, helping the third-ranked Eagles to a pair of shutout wins. During a 9-0 win over Christopher Newport University, ranked 12th in the Atlantic South Region, she teamed with senior Gabrielle Clark in the first doubles match to defeat their counterparts 8-0. Later in the day, the duo earned another 8-0 first doubles win, while Goodman later claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles, during the Eagles’ 9-0 win over Agnes Scott College. With the victories, the freshman improved her singles record to 6-1 in dual matches and to 13-6 overall, while raising her doubles record to 10-5 during the 2013-14 campaign. Goodman’s play has helped the Eagles begin their season with a perfect 12-0 record.
Emory University senior Gabrielle Clark earned a pair of singles wins last week, including a victory over the second-ranked player in Division II to clinch a team win for the second-ranked Eagle over Columbus State University, the fifth-ranked team in Division II. Clark’s win over Columbus State’s Paola Cigui (who was 50-0 in singles matches over her career prior to facing Clark) in the first singles match was the deciding point in the Eagles’ 5-4 win, as the senior came away with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win. Earlier in the contest, she dropped the first doubles match by an 8-6 score. Clark finished the week with a 2-1 record in singles matches, earning a win in the first singles match, 6-0, 6-0, against Clayton State University (another D-II program), and falling in the first singles match against Georgia Gwinnett College of the NAIA, 6-4, 6-0. With the two singles wins during the week, she moved into sole possession of second-place in school history with 87 career wins. Clark was also 2-3 during the week in doubles play, including an 8-1 in the first doubles match against Clayton State, and an 8-2 win in the first doubles match against Millsaps College. Clark’s play during the week helped the Eagles win all seven of their matches, improving to 10-0 in 2014.
Emory University junior Rebecca Siegler won both of her singles and doubles matches during the opening week of the second-ranked women’s tennis team’s spring campaign. On Thursday against Shorter University, an NAIA program, Siegler won the second singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and teamed with sophomore Madison Gordon to win the second doubles match by an 8-5 score, as the Eagles went on to win by an 8-1 score. During Saturday’s 7-2 win over 25th-ranked Case Western Reserve University, she earned a 9-8 (3) win with Gordon in the first doubles match, and followed with a 6-1, 6-2 first singles win. In her first season with Emory, Siegler is undefeated in singles play with a 5-0 record, and has an 8-1 mark in doubles play. Siegler and the Eagles have opened the campaign with a 3-0 record.
Emory University freshman Katarina Su won her singles draw and went 2-2 in doubles play, while facing mostly NCAA Division I competition during the Georgia Southern Fall Invitational last weekend. In her singles flight, Su defeated opponents from Division I programs Kennesaw State in the quarterfinals and Georgia Southern in the semifinals, before claiming a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Florida Atlantic’s Lyndsey Boos to win the draw. In doubles play, the freshman teamed with sophomore Stephanie Loutsenko, as the pair won their final two matches against competitors from Division I Savannah State and Florida Atlantic. Su finished the fall with a singles record of 8-1, with her only loss coming against teammate Madison Gordon during the ITA Regional Championships. She also was 3-5 in doubles matches during the fall season.
Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield won the singles draw at the 2013 USTA/ITA Small College Nationals last weekend. Satterfield, who entered the draw as the fourth-seeded player, defeated Cristina Nunez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. She followed that performance with a 6-1, 6-0 upset victory over top-seeded Megan Tang of Chicago in the semifinals, and went on to win the draw with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over second-seeded Sonja Meighan of Washington and Lee University. In the ‘Super Bowl,’ Satterfield suffered a three-set loss to Junior College singles winner Nirianta Rosolomalala of Georgia Perimeter College. Satterfield also teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler to finish third in the doubles draw, as the fourth-seeded duo defeated Casey Johnson and Auvi Tran of the University of Texas – Dallas 5-7, 6-4, 10-2 in the quarterfinals, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to top-seeded Meighan and Patricia Kirkland of Washington and Lee, and won the third-place match 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 over third-seeded Lea Lynn Yen and Sammy Chao of Pomona Pitzer Colleges. She became the second freshman in Emory history, and the fourth Eagle overall, to win the singles draw at the ITA Small College Nationals. Satterfield has started her Emory career with an 8-2 record in singles matches and a 6-1 record in doubles action.
Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2013 USTA/ITA South Regional Championships in Sewanee, Tennessee last weekend. After receiving a first-round bye, Satterfield, the second-seeded player in the singles draw, went on to win each of her next five matches to claim the tournament victory. Highlights from her singles victories include a marathon four-hour, 40-minute win over fifth-seeded teammate Madison Gordon in the semifinals (7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-6 (3)) and a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win over sixth-seeded teammate Melissa Goodman in the finals. In doubles play, Satterfield teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler to comprise the draw’s second-seeded pair, and won four-straight matches to claim the title, including an 8-2 win over top-seeded teammates Brenna Kelly and Goodman in the finals. She became the third Emory freshman to win the singles draw in the program’s history, and the first since Serena Burkard in 2004, in addition to being the fourth Emory freshman to be a part of the winning doubles pairing. Satterfield and Siegler will participate in the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals in October.
