2012-13 Emory Men's Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

    Emory University senior Miller Douglas claimed six all-America honors at the 2013 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship in Shenandoah, Texas last week, including the National Championship in the 200-yard butterfly. Douglas won the National Championship with a time of 1:46.64 in the finals of the event, becoming the third-straight Eagle to win the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships. He also earned all-America finishes in his other two individual events, finishing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:49.78, and seventh in the 400-yard individual medley after swimming a time of 3:56.06 in the preliminaries. Douglas contributed to all-America finishes and school records as the fly leg of both of Emory’s medley relays, leading the 200-yard medley relay to a third-place finish with a time of 1:28.72, and the 400-yard medley relay to a sixth-place finish with a mark of 3:17.28. Douglas capped off his career with a seventh-place finish as the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team. He ended his two-year career at Emory with the one National Championship, and 10 all-America certificates. Douglas accounted for 65.5 points at the meet, helping the Eagles record a fifth-place finish.

    Emory University junior Matt O'Brien recorded NCAA 'B' cut times in two events and a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly at the Midwest Invitational last weekend. O'Brien won the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.10, good for an NCAA provisional qualifying time. He also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, later recording a 'B' cut time of 49.41 seconds in the time trials. O'Brien rounded out the meet with a mark of 21.65 seconds in the time trials of the 50-yard freestyle. His performance at the Midwest Invitational helped the Emory men to a team victory at the meet.

    Emory University freshman Andrew Wilson was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookie of the Year, after winning two individual events and two relays, in addition to setting four conference records and three pool records at the 2013 UAA Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Wilson won the conference title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:02.51 in the preliminaries, as the time set pool and UAA records in addition to being good for an NCAA ‘A’ cut time. He completed the sweep of the breaststroke events with a winning time of 56.25 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke, also a pool- and conference-best mark. The freshman swam the breaststroke leg on both of the Eagles’ UAA-record setting medley relays, leading the 400-yard medley relay to a win with a time of 3:20.51, and the 200-yard medley relay to a victory in a time of 1:30.92 (a pool record). Wilson scored in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing fifth with a time of 1:53.34. He totaled 121 of the Eagles’ 1,818.5 points at the meet, helping the squad to its 15th-consecutive UAA Championship.

    Emory University sophomore Hayden Baker notched a pair of NCAA ‘B’ cut times during the fifth-ranked Eagles’ dual meet against Division I Georgia Tech on Saturday. Baker was Emory’s top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly, claiming third place with a provisional qualifying 50.36 seconds. He also finished third in the 200-yard butterfly with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:52.74. Baker added an eighth-place finish as the leadoff leg of the Eagles’ 400-yard freestyle ‘D’ relay, which finished in a time of 3:15.74. The sophomore totaled six points during the Eagles’ 197-77 loss to the Yellow Jackets. Baker and the Emory men finished the 2012-13 dual meet season with a 1-6 record, with all seven meets coming against NCAA Division I, II or NAIA schools, including three against SEC or ACC opponents.

    Emory University senior Miller Douglas won all three events he competed in during the Eagles’ dual meet victory over the Savannah College of Art and Design on ‘Senior Day’ on Saturday. Douglas won the 200-yard butterfly with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:51.20. He also recorded a provisional qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley, winning the race with a time of 4:05.74. Douglas opened the meet by helping the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 1:34.20, swimming the first leg of the relay. Douglas was a key factor in the Eagles’ 146-105 win over the Bees, accounting for 20.75points, and helping the team improve to 1-5.

    Emory University senior diver Ben Lee won events on both boards and recorded an NCAA qualifying score during the Eagles’ dual meet victory over the Savannah College of Art and Design on ‘Senior Day’ on Saturday. Lee claimed a victory in the three-meter dive with an NCAA qualifying score of 288.00. He also won the one-meter dive with a score of 247.05. Lee accounted for 18 points during the meet, helping the Eagles improve to 1-5 in dual meets this season with a 146-105 victory over SCAD.

    Emory University freshman Eagan Zettlemoyer swept the distance freestyle events during the Eagles’ Thursday dual meet against the University of Tampa, an NCAA Division II program. Zettlemoyer finished first out of eight competitors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.81. He later claimed a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, claiming the top spot out of eight swimmers with a mark of 10:03.42. Zettlemoyer contributed 18 points to the Eagles effort, as Emory was edged by Tampa by a 133-129 score.

    Emory University junior Ryan Bass was a part of three ‘A’ cut performances, while facing mostly Division I competition at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational last weekend. Bass recorded an individual ‘A’ cut in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing first with a time of 20.38 seconds, just a hundredth of a second off his own school-record time. He swam the third leg of Emory’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, set meet and school records with an automatic qualifying time of 1:20.84 en route to winning the event. Bass was also the anchor leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team, which finished first with an ‘A’ cut time of 1:30.01. In addition, Bass recorded a ‘B’ cut time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.94 seconds, good for an eighth place finish. The seven-time all-American helped the Eagles finish first in the team standings at the Miami Invitational.

    Emory University junior Jake Stephens recorded two NCAA ‘B’ cut times and a first-place finish during the second-ranked Eagles’ dual meet against the University of Georgia, ranked 10th among NCAA Division I squads, on Friday night. Stephens swam the leadoff leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard freestyle relay, which won the event with a ‘B’ cut time of 1:23.04, the best mark this year for Emory. Earlier, he finished third in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:04.28, good for a provisional mark as well. Stephens also finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.25 seconds. He accounted for 6.75 points during the Eagles’ 114-83 loss to UGA, as Emory fell to 0-4 on the season in dual meets.

    Emory University diver Ben Lee recorded a pair of top-two finishes at the 1st-Annyal Sewanee Invitational Diving Meet last Saturday. Lee won the one-meter dive (11 dives) with a career-best score of 342.90. The senior added a second career-best mark with a score of 239.10 in the three-meter dive (six dives), finishing second in the event.

    Emory University senior Justin Beegle recorded a pair of NCAA ‘B’ cut times during the top-ranked Eagles tri-meet against Division I Florida State University and Division II Florida Southern College. Beegle finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:06.65, the fastest so far this season by an Eagle and good for a provisional qualifying time. Earlier, Beegle swam the breaststroke leg of the Eagles’ 400-yard medley relay team, which finished fourth in a ‘B’ cut time of 3:25.65. He also finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.29 seconds, and 14th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.45. Despite his performance, Emory fell to Florida State by a 222-70 score, and 174.5-87.5 to Florida Southern.

    Emory University senior Ben Lee won the one-meter dive during the Eagles’ dual meet against NCAA Division I UNC Wilmington on Saturday. Lee registered a career-best score of 237.70 in the one-meter dive (six dives), besting his two D-I opponents in the event and contributing nine points to the Eagles’ team effort. Despite Lee’s performance, Emory fell to UNC Wilmington by a score of 160-131 in its first intercollegiate meet of the 2012-13 season.

    Emory University junior Ross Spock was part of two NCAA ‘B’ cut performances during the Eagles’ dual meet against NCAA Division I UNC Wilmington on Saturday. Spock finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.85 seconds, good for an NCAA provisional qualifying time. He later swam the second leg of Emory’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, helping the squad to an event victory with a ‘B’ cut time of 1:23.09. Spock, a 10-time all-American, also swam the backstroke leg of the Eagles’ second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:33.55), and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (47.00 seconds) on Saturday. Spock and the Eagles, who finished third at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships, dropped a 160-131 decision to their Division I opponents to fall to 0-1 on the season.
