Emory Women's Cross Country First, Men Second At Gulf Coast Stampede

The Emory women's cross country team turned in a first-place finish and the men recorded a runner-up performance at the Gulf Coast Stampede Saturday morning.  The event was held at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Florida.  

The 29th-ranked women's side took claimed the top spot out of seven teams with 25 points while Harding University placed second with 45 points.  Host school West Florida held down the No. 3 position (79 pts.) while Point University (94) and Auburn-Montgomery (158 pts.) rounded out the top five.  The Eagles captured two of the top three and four of the top six individual finishers led by senior Tamara Surtees who posted a 5K time of 18:51 that was second in the 80-runner field.  Junior Marissa Gogniat posted a mark of 18:57 that was good for third place while the senior tandem of Stephanie Crane (19:04) and Elise Viox (19:15) registered fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively.  Rounding out the squad's scorers was freshman Halle Markel, whose performance of 19:25 was good for 10th place.

The men's side totaled 54 points, second only to Harding University's 29 points.  Junior Lukas Mees paced the team with a season-best 8K time of 26:28 that placed him fourth out of 62 entries.  Sophomore Grant Murphy was the next Eagle to score with his 26:46 ranking ninth in the field.  Senior Tyler Cooke finished 11th at 26:55 while freshman Jordan Flowers came through with a 27:10 that positioned him in the No. 13 spot.  Sophomore Austin Hunt (27:27, 18th) closed out the team's scorers.

The Eagles return to action on Oct. 4 when they venture to Jacksonville, Alabama to compete in JSU Foothills Invitational.
