2022-23 Women’s Golf Season Recap

2022-23 Women’s Golf Season Recap

In the fifth year as a program, the Emory University women's golf team accomplished another successful season with another trip back to the NCAA Tournament and a conference title.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Katie Futcher, the Eagles won five different tournaments this season and took home the UAA Championship for the second consecutive season. Emory held the No. 1 seed going into the NCAA Tournament where they ended with a fifth place finish. At the end of the season, Futcher announced her retirement after a historic career at Emory.

The sophomore duo of Sharon Mun and Ellen Dong became the backbone for the Eagles this season after helping to win the national title last season. Mun played a pivotal role in the success all year long holding the lowest stroke average on the team with a 73.7 over 19 rounds of action. She posted a low-round score of 68 at the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate which helped push her to a second place finish at the event. Mun started her season with a first place finish out of 78 athletes at the Hamilton College Invitational in September shooting one under (145). She finished her fall season with another first placed finish shooting six under at the Women's Golfweek DIII Fall Preview. At the Stith Invitational in Virginia, Mun shot a 153 over two rounds to finish in third place at the event. In head-to-head action at the UAA Championships, she defeated NYU in the first round and Carnegie Mellon in the second to help secure the conference title. Mun ended the spring with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships shooting a 233 over three rounds.

Dong also had another spectacular season this year after winning the second ever Emory golf individual title during her freshman year. She followed closely behind Mun with a 75.9 stroke average over 19 rounds of competition. She held a low-round score of 71 at both the Women's Golfweek DIII Fall Preview and the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling. Dong finished in a tie for fourth place at the DIII Fall Preview shooting a 217 over three rounds (71-72-74) as well as the Max and Susan Stith Invitational shooting a 149 (76-73). At the UAA Championships, Dong defeated both athletes for NYU and Carnegie Mellon for the UAA Championship title. She tied for 17th at the NCAA Tournament shooting a 235 (76-82-77).

Along with Mun and Dong successful season, junior Irene Wang was back for just her second full season with the team and played a major role during the year. She competed in seven events this year shooting a 77.5 stroke average across 16 rounds and finished in the top-20 four times. Wang shot a low-round score of 73 at the Poppy Hills Patriot Invitational to finish with a 224 (76-73-75). She opened the fall season with a 153 (78-75) ending in a tie for ninth at the Hamilton College Invitational. Her second best finish came at the Max and Susan Stith Invitational where she shot a 155 (78-77) to finish in a tie for 16th.

The Eagles opened the season with a first place finish at the Hamilton College Invitational where they shot a two round score of 600 (302-298). Two weeks later at the MCC Women's Intercollegiate, Emory turned in a two-day team score of 595 (296-299) to finish fourth out of 15 schools. The Eagles closed out the fall season with a win at the Golfweek DIII Fall Preview.

Opening the spring with a win at the Savannah Invitational, the Eagles went on the following weekend to compete at the UAA Championships earning their second consecutive conference title. In the first round of competition against NYU, the winner came down to the final hole of play. With the match knotted at two, Wang pulled out a victory to secure the spot in the championship finals. After the tournament, Dong and Mun were named to the six-golfer UAA All-Tournament team with Mun claiming the Tournament MVP honors. The next day against Carnegie Mellon, the conference title came down to another nailbiter with the Eagles taking the match 3-2 to win the title. The Eagles rode the momentum all the way to the DIII Championships.

Heading into the tournament as the No. 1 seed, the Eagles finished the first day of competition in first place after shooting a 315. The conclusion of the second day saw the Eagles in a tie for fourth with a two-day score of 629 before the third round was cancelled due to an unplayable hole. Emory shot a team-tournament best 311 in the final round of competition to finish fifth overall with a three-round score of 950.

The honors poured in again for the Eagles this season with Dong and Mun earning All-UAA First Team honors and 2023 WGCA All-America First and Second Team recognition respectively.
