  • McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg

    Emory University senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg won the National Championship in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships last week. Newsum-Schoenberg won the event with a school-record time of 2:00.43 in the finals, giving her the first National Title of her career, and the 27 individual title in the program’s history. She added an All-America finish in the 500-yard freestyle, placing seventh in the finals after swimming a time of 4:51.37 in the preliminaries, and earned an all-America honorable mention in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing ninth with a time of 16:58.27. Newsum-Schoenberg ended her Emory career eight all-America honors and four all-America honorable mentions. She scored 41 points for the Eagles, helping Emory win its sixth-consecutive NCAA Division III Championship and its eighth overall.

    Emory University junior Kellen Hope finished fourth in the one-meter dive and sixth in the three-meter dive at the 2015 NCAA Division III Region 2 Zone Diving Championships in San Antonio, Texas last weekend. Hope recorded a score of 401.30 in the one-meter dive, just seven-tenths of a point short of third place and a qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships. She added a mark of 362.20 in the three-meter dive.

    Emory University freshman Rebecca Upton recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in a pair of events at the Emory Invitational this weekend. Upton won the finals of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.95 seconds, and finished second in the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley with a mark of 4:29.20. Both marks were good for NCAA provisional times, and were career-best times for the freshman. Upton also swam in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle, finishing sixth in a time of 54.91 seconds, another season-best mark. Upton helped the Eagles finish in first place in the team standings at the meet.

    Emory University senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg was named the University Athletic Association Swimmer of the Year, after helping lead the Eagles to their 17th-consecutive UAA Championship last weekend. Newsum-Schoenberg won the 500-yard freestyle in a UAA-record time of 4:52.13, while adding an individual victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a mark of 16:54.47. She also set a conference record in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:01.52, before claiming third-place in the finals. Newsum-Schoenberg added ninth-place finishes as a part of the Eagles’ 800-yard freestyle relay (7:32.89) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:27.79). She accounted for 110 of the team’s 2,076.5 points, helping the squad to the UAA title.

    Emory University junior MacKenzie Brosnahan notched four first-place finishes on Saturday, as the top-ranked Eagles picked up a dual meet victory at the University of the South. Brosnahan was the top finisher in a pair of individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.95 seconds, and the 100-yard freestyle in a mark of 55.18 seconds. Both times were her fastest of the season in the respective events. She also contributed to a pair of relay victories, swimming the freestyle leg of Emory’s winning 200-yard medley relay (1:51.56) and the anchor leg of the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.08). Brosnahan contributed 20.75 points towards the Eagles’ team total, helping the squad defeat the University of the South 138-128, and finish the year with an 8-1 record in dual meets.

    Emory University junior Kellen Hope recorded a career-best score in the one-meter dive during the top-ranked Eagles’ dual meet against the University of Georgia, ranked first in Division I. Hope finished second overall in the event with a score of 276.68. The score was 11.78 points higher than her previous career-best dive, and cleared the NCAA Division III qualifying mark by 21.68 points. Hope scored four points towards Emory’s team total, as the Eagles fell to the Bulldogs 163-127, ending their dual meet campaign with an 8-1 record.

    Emory University junior Kellen Hope notched a pair of NCAA diving qualifying scores during the top-ranked Eagles’ dual meet wins over the University of West Florida, ranked 14th in Division II, and Darton College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday. Hope won the one-meter dive with a score of 264.90, and finished second in the three-meter dive with a mark of 268.35. Both scores were career-best marks for the junior. Hope’s efforts helped lead the Eagles to a 130.5-103.5 win over West Florida and a 154-34 triumph over Darton to improve to 7-0 in dual meets this season.

    Emory University senior Nancy Larson celebrated her ‘Senior Day’ with wins in three events during the top-ranked Eagles’ dual meet victories over the University of West Florida, ranked 14th in Division II, and Darton College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday. Larson claimed an individual win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.53 seconds. She added victories as the anchor leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay (1:47.67) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.09). Larson’s efforts helped lead the Eagles to a 130.5-103.5 win over West Florida and a 154-34 triumph over Darton to improve to 7-0 in dual meets this season.

    Emory University junior Ellie Thompson qualified for the finals of both backstroke events at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin, a long-course meet that featured some of the top swimmers in the country. Thompson finished 29th in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:20.07 in the finals, after swimming a mark of 2:20.95 in the morning session, finishing 29th in the preliminaries. She also finished 26th in the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:04.81, after recording a 29th-place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 1:05.28.

    Emory University freshman Rebecca Upton won the 200-yard butterfly in an NCAA ‘B’ cut time during the top-ranked Eagles’ dual meet win at Florida Southern College, the sixth-ranked team in Division II. Upton won the event with a time of 2:08.29, good for a provisional mark in the event. She also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.05. Upton contributed 15 points towards the Eagles’ team total, helping Emory improve to 5-0 in dual meets this season with a 176-105 win over the Moccasins.

    Emory University senior Nancy Larson recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in four individual events and five relays at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio last week. Facing a field consisting mostly of Division I competitors, Larson recorded a top-five finish and a provision time in each of the three freestyle sprint events, including a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.20 seconds. She added a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.29 in the preliminaries) and a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.45 seconds in the preliminaries). Her fourth individual ‘B’ cut time came in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley, where she finished fifth with a time of 2:04.40. Larson helped the Eagles to first-place finishes in three relays, swimming the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.30), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.29) and 200-yard medley relay (1:42.78). She also swam the anchor leg on Emory’s second-place 800-yard freestyle relay (7:23.71) and the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay (3:47.33). Larson’s performance helped the top-ranked Eagles finish fourth among seven teams at the meet.

    Emory University freshman Mara Rosenstock won both 11-dive events at the Emory Diving Invitational last Saturday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. Rosenstock finished first out of two divers in the three-meter dive with a score of 461.95. She followed that with a win in the one-meter dive (out of six divers) with a score of 455.70, less than five points away from the school record. Both of her scores were career-best marks and good for NCAA qualifying scores. Rosenstock scored 40 points towards the Eagles’ team total, helping the squad win the meet.
  • Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe

    Emory University sophomore Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe swept the butterfly events to help the Eagles to dual meet victories against the Savannah College of Art and Design and Brenau University on Saturday. Sanchez-Aizcorbe won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.26, her best mark of the season. She later claimed a second individual win in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 58.87 seconds. Sanchez-Aizcorbe also swam the butterfly leg of the Eagles’ second-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:49.77). She totaled 19 points towards the team total during the meet, helping the Eagles improve to 4-0 on the year with a 184-66 win over Brenau and a 178-79 victory against SCAD.

    Emory University freshman Natalie Bauer recorded season-best scores in both diving events during the Eagles’ dual meet against Birmingham-Southern College. Bauer finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 191.51. She was also the runner-up in the three-meter dive, registering a score of 184.06. Bauer’s performance helped the Eagles earn a 210-69 win over the Panthers, as the squad improved to 2-0 on the season.

    Emory University sophomore Annelise Kowalsky won all three events she swam in during the Eagles’ dual meet victory at Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday. Kowalsky finished first in the 400-yard individual medley, recording an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:31.79. She also collected wins in the 100-yard butterfly (58.84 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.05). Kowalsky’s efforts helped lead the Eagles to a 210-69 win, as the squad improved to 2-0 in dual meets for the season.

    Emory University sophomore Claire Liu won all four events she swam in on Saturday, to help the Eagles to a 157-131 win over the NCAA Division I University of North Carolina-Wilmington at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. Liu claimed a pair of individual first-place finishes, winning the 100-yard backstroke (57.19 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.13 seconds), each in an NCAA provisional qualifying time. She also swam the freestyle leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay, which won the event in an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:45.89, and the second leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard freestyle relay, which finished first in a mark of 1:36.36. Liu contributed 20.75 points towards Emory’s team total, to help the Eagles open the 2014-15 campaign with a dual meet win.

    Emory University freshman Mara Rosenstock won both diving events during the Eagles’ season-opening dual meet against the NCAA Division I University of North Carolina-Wilmington on Saturday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. Competing in her first intercollegiate meet, Rosenstock finished first out of six competitors in the one-meter dive with a score of 278.78, good for an NCAA qualifying score. Earlier in the meet, she registered the top score of the six competitors in the three-meter dive, winning the event with a mark of 261.68. Rosenstock totaled 18 points for the Eagles, helping the squad upset its Division I opponent by a 157-131 score.

    Emory University freshman Ming Ong won two individual events and a relay during her collegiate debut on Friday, the Blue-Gold Meet. Swimming for the Blue team, Ong won both the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:52.63, and the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:07.89, with both marks surpassing the NCAA ‘B’ cut times. She also swam the third leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.63) and the freestyle leg on the third-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:52.06). Ong scored 21.25 points for the Blue team, which fell to the Gold team by a 158.5-134.5 score.

    Emory University freshman Mara Rosenstock won both diving events during her collegiate debut at the Blue-Gold Meet last Friday. Competing for the Gold team, Rosenstock won the one-meter dive with a score of 222.13. She followed that with a win in the three-meter dive, registering a score of 205.13. Rosenstock contributed 18 points to the Gold team’s total, helping the squad to a 158.5-134.5 win over the Blue Team.
