Emory Opens Season with 11-2 Win at Occidental

Emory University junior Connor Dillman pitched five innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball, and freshman third baseman Philip Maldari homered in his second career at-bat to power the Eagles to a season-opening win at Occidental College on Friday afternoon, 11-2.

Every Emory starting position player reach base at least once in the game, led by junior left fielder Brett Lake, who finished the game three-for-three with a double, two walks, a run scored and three runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Dillman was dominant on the mound, striking out three during his outing, earning the win in the game.  Junior Michael Byman added scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, while junior Jordan Selbach limited the Tigers to a pair of runs in his collegiate debut in the eighth.

The Eagles jumped on top early in the game, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from senior designated hitter Daniel Iturrey.  Emory's big inning came in a five-run third, which was capped off by the Maldari home run, a two-run shot over the left field wall.

Emory added on a pair of runs in the fourth inning, and single runs in the fifth and seventh and eighth to cement the victory.

Senior catcher Jared Welch homered in the ninth, driving in three runs in the process, and sophomore Steven Summey recorded the first out in the ninth inning, but the game was called immediately after due to darkness, negating the entire frame.

Occidental dropped to 0-2 on the year, as freshman starting pitcher Devon DeRaad took the loss to fall to 0-1.

The Eagles will continue their Southern California road trip on Saturday, facing 10th-ranked California Lutheran University in a doubleheader, starting at 2:00 PM ET.
