Baseball Wraps-Up Regular Season with Rain-Shortened Win over Huntingdon

Baseball Wraps-Up Regular Season with Rain-Shortened Win over Huntingdon

Emory University concluded its regular season on Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of Huntingdon College with a 5-3 win at Chappell Park, after the game was called after eight innings due to rain.

The Eagles concluded the regular season with an overall record of 29-10, the most victories by the team in a single season since the 2007 campaign.  Emory won its last 10 game against Division III opponents in 2014, and 10 of its last 11 overall.

Emory picked up 16 hits in the game, including a 13 hits from the top five batters in the order in 24 at bats.  Senior Brandon Hannon, junior Brett Lake and senior Daniel Iturrey each had three hits in the game.

Emory plated a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Iturrey.  After the Hawks tied the game with a run in the top of the third, the Eagles responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame on RBI hits from Peacock and senior Jared Welch

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the sixth, when Huntingdon evened the score again with a pair of runs.  In the bottom of the inning, senior Ryan Toscano started an Emory rally with a one-out single.  Sophomore David Coble pinch ran for Toscano and stole second to get in scoring position with sophomore Jack Karras at the plate.  Karras would go on to single through the right side of the infield, driving in Coble from second to put Emory up 4-3.

The Eagles added a run in the eighth on a RBI single from Lake, his 58th run batted in of the season, five short of the school's single-season record and matching Joe Roth's 2007 total for the fourth most in a single season in school history.

As the two teams went to take the field for the top of the ninth, the game was stopped due to lightning in the area.  As a thunderstorm moved in, play was never resumed, and the Eagles went home with a rain-shortened victory after eight.

Senior Ben Hinojosa started and pitched five solid innings in a no-decision, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out four.  Leaving with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, senior Robert Gross limited the damage to just two runs over an inning of work, striking out a pair, and earning a victory to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Freshman Jackson Weeg held the Hawks scoreless over the next inning and two thirds, before freshman Kyle Monk entered the game to record the final out of the eighth inning, earning his first career save.

Starter Tate Fowler (1-2) took the loss for Huntingdon, which ended its season with a 21-17 overall record.

Emory will now await the selection of the field for the 2014 NCAA Championships, set to be released on May 11th at midnight.  With the solid finish to the season, the Eagles are a strong candidate for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
