Emory Baseball Wraps-Up Cali Trip with Win over Pomona-Pitzer

Emory University defeated Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 17-2 on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up its four-game season-opening California road trip with a 3-1 record.

The Eagles' bats once again came up big, as the squad registered 16 hits and put up a double-digit run total for the third time through four games this year.

After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the second.  Junior center fielder Wes Peacock singled to start the inning, and scored on an RBI double to right centerfield by Jordan Selbach.  Selbach, who advanced to third on a throw, later scored a run of his own on a sacrifice fly from senior third baseman Ryan Toscano.  Peacock and Selbach would combine for another run in the third inning, when Peacock doubled with two out, and Selbach singled to center field to drive him in, extending the Eagles' lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, sophomore second baseman David Coble walked and stole both second and third, before scoring on an RBI groundout from senior center fielder Brandon Hannon.  Later in the inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs before Peacock singled in a pair of runs, pushing the Emory advantage to 6-0.  Hannon and Lake each drove in runs on base hits in the fifth inning as well, further buffering the Eagles' lead.

Freshman Jackson Weeg pitched the first four-and-two-thirds innings for the Eagles in his collegiate debut on the mound, holding the Sagehens to a pair of unearned runs on six hits and four walks, striking out three batters.  Senior Robert Gross entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, and induced a groundout to third base to end the Pomona-Pitzer threat.

Gross would go on to earn the win in the game, throwing two-and-a-third hitless innings and allowing just one batter to reach on a hit by pitch, while striking out one.

The score remained 8-2 until the top of the eighth, when Emory added on four more runs on an RBI double from Iturrey, a bases-loaded pinch hit walk drawn by junior Warren Kember and a two-RBI single from sophomore shortstop Jack Karras.  Kember struck again in the top of the ninth with a bases-clearing three RBI double, and freshman Jack Dougherty drove in two more with a single to cap off the Eagles' scoring.

Freshman Andrew Doetsch pitched a scoreless eighth in his collegiate debut, and senior Matt McMahon closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth.

Freshman Pomona-Pitzer starter Casey Hershfield took the loss for the Sagehens, who fell to 1-3 on the season.

Emory will be back in Georgia this week, opening up a three-game series with Piedmont College on Friday, February 14th at 7:00 PM in Demorest, GA.  The Eagles home opener will be the following day at Chappell Park starting at 2:00 PM.
