#29 Emory Falls in Ninth Inning to Centre College

Down a run with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Centre College rallied to score a pair of runs in the ninth inning, going on to defeat 29th-ranked Emory University 6-5 at Chappell Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 18-8 on the season and ended the Eagles' four-game winning streak.  Centre improved to 6-15 with the win.

Emory jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring two in the first inning on Brett Lake's fourth home run of the season.  However, the Eagles would not get another hit off freshman starter Jordan Short until sixth inning.  In between, the Colonels scored two in the third and one in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead over Emory.

The Eagles' bats came alive in the sixth, when junior Wes Peacock singled to start the inning and tied the game at 3-3 when he scored on an RBI double from senior Jared Welch.  The Eagles regained the lead an inning later, on an RBI single from Daniel Iturrey.

Centre refused to go away, scoring a run in the top of the eighth on a single up the middle with two outs from Zach Montgomery, his first hit of the season.  Emory regained the lead in the ninth when Jordan Selbach reached on an error, later scoring on a squeeze bunt laid down by senior Josh Bokor, but the Colonels struck for two runs with two outs in the ninth, taking the lead for good.

Lake would single with one out in the ninth, representing the game-tying run, but Centre freshman Brett Vitkun would shut the Eagles down to earn the win in relief.

Following the loss, the Eagles will now turn their attention towards a big three-game series this weekend against 10th-ranked Birmingham-Southern College.  Emory will play in Birmingham, Alabama at 7:00 PM ET on Friday, March 28th, followed by games at Chappell Park at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th
