Emory Wins Fourth-Straight with 7-1 Victory over DePauw

Freshman Hans Hansen pitched seven shutout innings and Emory University completed a three-game sweep of its weekend series against DePauw defeating the Tigers 7-1 at Chappell Park on Sunday afternoon.

Hansen held DePauw scoreless on five hits and two walks, while striking out five batters over seven innings on 101 pitches.  He improved to a team-best 5-1, while lowering his ERA to 3.07 for the season.  He has gone 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA, 14 hits allowed 11 strikeouts and three walks over his past two starts, spanning 15 innings.

Senior Robert Gross closed the game out, allowing a run over the final two innings to complete the victory for Emory.

The win was the fourth-straight for Emory, which improved to 18-7 for the year.  DePauw dropped to 2-7 with the loss.

DePauw starter Wyatt Spector went pitch-for-pitch with Hansen through the first three innings, but Emory finally broke through against the southpaw in the bottom of the fourth after senior Jared Welch stole second and third base, and then scored on a one-out RBI single from junior Jordan Selbach.

DePauw had a chance to even the game in the top of the fifth, when Ryan Grippo attempted a squeeze bunt with runners on the corners and nobody out.  However, Hansen picked the ball up with his glove, and scooped it to Welch behind the plate, who applied the tag to Connor Einertson for the first out of the inning.  Hansen would induce a pair of groundouts from the next two batters to end the frame.

Emory would break the game open with a three-run fifth inning on an RBI single from junior Wes Peacock and a throwing error on the play that scored an additional run, and a sacrifice fly from Welch.  Senior Jared Kahn picked up an RBI double in the sixth, and senior Daniel Iturrey scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to push Emory's lead to 6-0.  After DePauw scored in the top of the eighth to break up the shutout, senior Brandon Hannon capped off the scoring with another RBI hit in the eighth inning.

Kahn led the 14-hit attack with a four-for-five game out of the leadoff position, notching two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases, raising his batting average to .338.  Hannon, Welch and Selbach each had two-hit games for Emory on Sunday as well.

Spector took the loss for DePauw, falling to 1-2 on the season.

The Eagles will wrap-up their four game home stand on Wednesday, March 26th, when Emory plays host to Center College, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.
