Eagles Fall to #24 Case in Penultimate Game of UAA Championships

Emory University dropped a 9-6 decision to 24th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon in Sanford, FL, as the Spartans clinched at least a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with the victory.

The Eagles will face Brandeis University on Sunday in the last game of the conference tournament, and can split the title with Case with a victory over the Judges.  The Spartans finished the tournament with a 6-2 UAA record, while the Eagles stand at 5-2.

Junior Brett Lake went two-for-five with an RBI in the loss, extending his hitting streak to 22 games.  The streak is the fourth-longest in the program's history, trailing only former Eagles Bryan Langbord (29 games in 2004), Frank Pfister (25 games in 2007) and Andrew Cohn (23 games in 2008-09).

Freshman Philip Maldari added a three-for-three day, raising his batting average to .364 for the campaign.  Senior Jared Welch added a two-hit effort for Emory.

After a scoreless first inning, Emory took the lead in the second with four runs in the frame, including RBI singles from Welch, senior Jared Kahn and Lake.  However, the Spartans battled back with a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings to tie the game of Emory starter Connor Dillman.

The Eagles regained the lead with two runs in the fifth, with Lake scoring on a throwing error, and Maldari driving in a run with a base hit.  But the Spartans would be quick to respond again, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, knotting the score at 6-6.

Case would break through, taking their first lead of the game with three runs in the third off freshman Jackson Weeg in the seventh.  Senior Mike Bitanga would enter the game and limit the damage with 1.2 scoreless innings, but the Eagles' bats would be unable to overcome the deficit.

Weeg took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the campaign, while reliever Robert Winemiller improved to 1-0 with the win.  Reliever Daniel Sondag closed out the game with a perfect inning and a third for his fourth save of the season, and his second against Emory during the tournament.

Emory now stands at 14-7 overall this season, while the Spartans improved to 11-3.

Emory and Brandeis will play at 10:00 AM on Sunday morning in Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, FL.
