Hannon Records 200th Hit in 10-2 Win over Southwestern

Hannon Records 200th Hit in 10-2 Win over Southwestern

Emory University senior Brandon Hannon became the 11th player in program history to record 200 hits over a career, and junior Connor Dillman led the Eagles with eight solid innings of work on the mound, as Emory opened a three-game weekend series with Southwestern University with a 10-2 win at Chappell Park on Friday.

Entering the game with 199 career hits, Hannon wasted little time reaching the milestone, singling up the middle on a 0-1 pitch with one out in the first inning to record his 200th tally.  He would then advance to second on a balk by Southwestern starting pitcher Joseph Koch, steal third, and score on a sacrifice fly from junior Brett Lake.

Hannon finished the game two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI double.  He is now tied for ninth in school history with former Eagle Mike Garvis with 201 career hits, and is three behind Bryan Langbord for eighth in school history.  In addition, he is now even with Kyle Foster for fourth in school history with 165 runs scored, and just three behind Brad Wands' third-place total.  Hannon's 45 runs scored this season lead all Division III players.

Hannon also became one of just two players in school history with 200 hits and 100 walks over a career, joining former Eagle Allen Rigell as the only two Emory players to accomplish the feat.

The Eagles would continue to build their lead, capitalizing on poor defense by the Pirates to score five unearned runs in the third, and four unearned runs in the fifth.  Freshman Philip Maldari highlighted the scoring in the third inning with a two-RBI double, while sophomore Jack Karras collected a pair of runs batted in with a hit in the fifth.

Dillman, meanwhile, was solid on the mound, holding Southwestern to a pair of runs on four hits over eight innings of work.  He struck out five and walked just one, raising his record to 6-1 on the year with a 2.41 ERA.  Junior Michael Byman closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth inning.

Lake finished the day two-for-three, pushing his Division III leading hit and RBI totals to 59 and 49, respectively.  Maldari added a two-for-three day at the plate, raising his batting average to .383.

Emory improved to 22-9 on the season with the victory, while Southwestern dropped to 10-24 with the defeat.  Koch took the loss for the Pirates, dropping to 0-3 on the year.

The Eagles and the Pirates will resume their three-game series at Chappell Park on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
