Emory Bats Come Alive in 13-4 Win over Oglethorpe

Emory University started early with a four-run first inning, and kept adding on runs throughout the game on Tuesday afternoon, as the Eagles went on to defeat Oglethorpe University 13-4 at Chappell Park.

Junior center fielder Wes Peacock led the way with a two-for-three performance at the plate, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning, his team-leading second long ball of the season.  Peacock finished the day with four RBIs, and is now tied for second on the team with 13 runs batted in this season, while batting .341.

Senior Ryan Toscano added a three-RBI day off the bench, including a pinch-hit two RBI double in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.  Junior Brett Lake went two for three, including an RBI double, to run his hitting streak to 12 games, and is now batting .533 this season.  Senior shortstop Jared Kahn capped off Emory's standout offensive performers, making his first start of the year for Emory and going two-for-four with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.

The 13 runs scored were the second-most in a game this season by the Eagles, and marked the fifth time through 11 games the team has scored in double-digits.  Emory is now averaging over 8.6 runs per game this season, and the squad's .319 batting average is on pace for the highest mark since the 2008 campaign.

Emory senior starter Ben Hinojosa allowed an earned run of four hits, while striking out two without walking a batter on 62 pitches, over a predetermined four innings of work to earn his first victory of the season.  Freshman Jackson Weeg pitched a pair of perfect relief innings in the fifth and sixth, while sophomore southpaw Steven Summey added a perfect seventh inning of relief, with the Eagles' pitchers retiring 11-straight Oglethorpe batters at one point.  After the Stormy Petrels struck for three runs in the eighth, senior Robert Gross closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth inning.

Emory improved to 7-4 on the season with the win, including a perfect 3-0 mark at Chappell Park this season.  The Stormy Petrels saw their three-game winning streak come to a close, as the squad dropped to 4-3 overall in 2014.

Emory will look for its hot-hitting to carry over into the weekend, when the Eagles host Rochester College (Mich.) of the NAIA at Chappell Park at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 1st and 11:00 AM on Sunday, March 2nd.
